| The
mission of the Toal Arboretum is as follows: |
- To
develop, curate, and maintain a well-documented collection of
living woody plants from around the world that are hardy
in County Leitrim, Ireland.
- To
facilitate experiential learning by allowing these plants
and their relatives and associates in nature to be studied and
researched by those enthusiastic or involved in botany or horticultural
studies and by augmenting the grounds with a well-maintained library
heavily stocked with books documenting the benefits of 'companion
planting'.
- To
provide instruction in the lessons and wisdom of nature:
the trees, shrubs, herbs and flowers.
- To
foster community development by eventually offering organized
hikes and naturalist programs as well as service outings for trail
maintenance.
- To
preserve the exceptional opportunities for solitude and
contemplation that exist in the natural settings of the mountain
and to cultivate social awareness of the rejuvenating and enlightening
impact that such solitude can have on the human spirit.
