How To Get the Most From Your Therapeutic Massage

Before You Arrive

Avoid alcohol.

Eat light or put food aside until after your session.

Remove all jewelry, earings, watches.

Bathe or shower and remove all makeup.

For pregnancy massage, wear loose fitting pants and top.

At the Beginning of the Session

Use the toilet (to prevent interrupting your massage later).

Turn off your mobile phone.

Tell your therapist how you found her.

Tell your therapist why you have chosen this service.

For a masssage using oils or lotions, remove as much clothing as you are comfortable with. Robes are provided for your use.

Let your therapist know specific areas of your body that need special care or attention, and also, about any health issues in your life.

During the Session

Breath deeply and evenly. Deep, rhythmic breathing improves circulation and oxygen flow, allowing energy to move more freely. The resulting expansion in the body's tissues promotes deep relaxation and relief from physical discomfort.

Focus on sensation. Focusing attention upon bodily sensation encourages the mind to remain present in the moment and to be less distracted by irrelevant thoughts, worries, and plans. With a childlike curiosity, be aware of your body as if you were experiencing it for the first time.

Communicate what you need. Let your therapist know if the pressure of the touch is too much or too little or anything else you need for comfort during your session (heat, light, volume of music, etc).

Allow periods of silence. Silence encourages the mind and body to relax deeply, enhancing your inner experience and allowing self-healing to occur naturally and spontaneously. There will be a brief period of quiet time at the end of your session for you to rest.

After the Session has Ended

Drink plenty of water. Not tea, not coffee, not fizzy drinks. Water is best, to which you can add a squirt of lemon juice. Replenish and rehydrate your physical body with water.

Fill out the Treatment Feedback Sheet.

Feel no requirement to rush away. This is your time to enjoy a retreat and chill out. You may even like to take some time to reflect & jot down a few notes of your own.

Avoid heavy meals.

Drive with extra care.

You may want to spend time relaxing to integrate the session into your total experience. Additionally, journaling or spending time in nature will promote body-mind integration. Try not to return right away to physical efforts or mind-taxing activities. Indulge yourself in calm.

Give the treatment time to work. Do nothing extra. Postpone bathing or showering for 2-6 hours.

To support you once you have returned home, I provide pregnancy affirmations, birth quotes to ponder, recommendation lists and links to books and products to aid you on your journey where ever that may lead....  to relieve tension, keep your energy flowing freely and your spirit alive and well, and inspire you to live a more relaxed and contented lifestyle.
